A Survey on Crippled Schoolchildren in Chonnam Area

Abstract
In order to investigate the epidemiological state of the orthopedic defect in schoolchildren in Chonnam area, two step survey was conducted upon whole primary, middle and high schools in Chonnam area and subsequent selected sample of 516 crippled children. Duration of this study was about 8 months from May to December, 1979.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The prevalence rate of crippled schoolchildren was 4.1 per 1,000. The rate was 4.4 in urban and 3.9 in rural area. On sex ratio, male was 4.8 per 1,000, and female was 3.2 per 1,000.
2. Among all the schools in Chonnam area the prevalence rate was highest in high schools as 6.0 per 1,000 and lowest in primary schools as 3.2 per 1,000. In middle schools the rate was 4.8.
On age ratio the rate was relatively high in the aged.
3. Average age of the crippled children was about 12.8 years, and 12 years old group was the largest among the whole age groups. Among the crippled children examined 6th graders were maximal in primary schools. But in middle and high schools 1st graders were most common.
4. Among all the crippled children 73.4% were due to acquired diseases. Of the diseases poliomyelitis was the most common cause as 57.9%, and various kinds of accidents were the next in order as 18.6%.
5. Through the whole crippled children average age onset was about 2.5 years, 2.1 years in urban and 2.7 years in rural area. Age onset by accidents was relatively high as 4.7 years compared with average age onset by diseases as 2.2 years.
6. The most common affected site was lower extremity as 73.4%, and defect of right lower extremity was more common. In case of the causative diseases the paralysis of right lower extremity was most common as 29.6%. In poliomyelitis, defect of lower extremity was more common as 82.3% than upper extremity.
7. In a family the incidence rate was high in the 1st 2 children.
8. Economic and educational status of the cripples parents has not been in direct relation to the severity of defect. An overall comparison of the cripples¢¥ school credits to the severity of defect has revealed no particular difference.
